Off of Milk

Christopher has horrible eczema and we think it's due to a milk allergy. Honestly, it's really bad. If you can look past the triple chins and the pinch-able cheeks below, you'll see just how awful his breakouts have become.

And this was the day after the really bad break out.

So I'm not eating any dairy. And ironically, I can't eat goat's milk or yogurt either because of the high correlation between cow's milk and goat's milk allergies. Folks, I had no idea how many milk products I'm used to eating. Besides cream for my coffee, I apparently consider ice cream and cheese as my go-to snacks when I'm hungry. And I'm always hungry. But that's another post.

In any case, I need to go get some snacks that are not Halloween candy and are not potato chips and are also not dairy. Any suggestions? I'm really hungry. And I can't have Christopher looking that scaly again.

We'll do another picture at the end of this week. So far, his skin has really improved and doesn't feel nearly as leathery as it did. If we get close to clear skin, I'll be thrilled. And hungry. And perhaps thinner?

I pop a potato or sweet potato in the microwave for a snack sometimes. i usually slab a little butter on it. Maybe you could use olive oil instead.

A couple of healthy (and rich!) snacks I'm hooked on are:

1. avocado and cucumbers. usually slathered on thin crackers. I eat at least one avocado every day. it's a very healthy fat, and excellent for weight control, believe it or not.

2. hummus. lotsa hummus. I like it with veggies, pita chips, or just on sandwiches. very filling and very healthy, especially if you whip it up yourself and watch the ingredients.

Good luck!

NUTS. Almonds and cashews. Excellent hunger killer, and good fats, like avocado. I second the hummous.. also try popcorn, smoked tofu cubes, and corn chips.
Good luck!

Dried fruit! Fills that need for sweet things really well also. Just be sure to brush your teeth more frequently.

Great suggestions!
Hard boiled eggs.
Chicken/turkey rollups from the deli.
Plus, a few days off cheese and milk and you'll lose that craving.
Good luck!!

For the eczema, try Aubrey's moisturizing products for little kids. Made in Florida. Healthfood type stores carry it. Don't know if Whole Foods does but maybe. All of these products contain coconut fatty acid as a base. The lauric acid in coconut oil helps to restore the acid mantle of the skin. The skin can then return to normal. Medscape has the results on a comparison study between the use of olive oil and coconut oil for atopic dermatoses, MRSA skin infection and eczema.
